LAUREN DANA SMITH - THE PROJECTS ROOM AT THE WRIGHT CONTEMPORARY

We’ve inaugurated a new gallery this month, called The Project Room, where I’m asking artists to curate their favorites from the area.

Paul Behnke, whose works were prominently included in “Explosive Abstraction,” chose Taos artist Lauren Dana Smith, about whom, Behnke notes, “In 2021, Smith’s digital series entitled ‘Box Breath’ was realized through a multi-step process: an image of origin was created through digital painting and drawing, and then was gradually manipulated through collage into each unique composition. Inspired by internal geometries and cellular landscapes, each composition is familiar, yet unidentifiable. There are hundreds of digital objects within this collection, all claiming relation to the originating paintings, but varying in degrees of color, light, saturation, and translucency.”

In the hallway, you’ll notice our first video piece (though a show of videos is planned for next year): Anna Bush Crews’s Bubble/Splash, a five-minute continuous loop on tablet, with sound, of the rushing currents of the Rio Grande. Her ceramic sculpture, El Abrazo, is in the Main Gallery of the drawings show.
